Olympian of the Year is an award by the Olympic Council of Malaysia, in recognition of the achievements of our national sportsmen and sportswomen. presented to the most outstanding male athlete and the most outstanding female athlete of the Malaysian contingents to multi-sport games under the direct control of OCM.

Selection of the Olympian of the Year is based on the results of the following Games are taken into consideration:

• Odd Years is SEA Games
• Even Years is Asian and Commonwealth Games or Olympic Games

The selection of athletes is decided by OCM based on the recommendations of the National Sports Associations. The control of entries and participation conditions are under the sole control of OCM. The Olympian of the Year will each receive a cash prize and a medallion. The Olympian of the Year Award is sponsored by Coca-Cola.

Hall of Fame – since its formation in 1953, the Olympic Council of Malaysia has formalised a concept called the hall of fame. the objective is to honour persons who have devoted themselves and contributed greatly to the development of sports in Malaysia.

First proposed in 1974 by the then Minister of Sports, Hamzah Abu Samah. The main role of the Hall of Fame is to depict the highlights of the progress of Sports in Malaysia.

The IOC Women and Sport trophies are awarded annually to promote the advancement of women in sport. the world body wants to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions made to develop, encourage and strengthen the participation of women and girls at all levels in the sports world. Six trophies are awarded – one winner at the world level and one each to Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania. some would be given diplomas.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today joined in International Women’s Day and revealed the winners of its 2008 Women and Sport Awards.

During the Opening Ceremony of the IV IOC World Conference on Women and Sport in Jordan, IOC President Jacques Rogge announced that the World “Women and Sport” Trophy has been awarded to the first female and youngest Minister of Youth and Sports in Malaysia, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Azalina was honoured for boosting the number of women practising sport in Malaysia – and this just under four years since her appointment.

As well as the World Trophy, five continental trophies were presented to women who have made outstanding contributions to strengthening the participation of women and girls in sports around the world. The 2008 winners – a mix of political personalities and former top athletes – were selected by the IOC Women and Sport Commission from 70 candidatures submitted by the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and International Federations (IFs):

1. Trophy for Africa: Ana Paula Dos Santos (Angola)
2. Trophy for the Americas: Abby Hoffman (Canada)
3. Trophy for Asia: Lingwei Li (China)
4. Trophy for Europe: Stefka Kostadinova (Bulgaria)
5. Trophy for Oceania:  Debbie Watson (Australia)

The ceremony took place at the Dead Sea in Jordan, in the presence of HM King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan; HRH Prince Feisal bin Al-Hussein, President of the Jordanian NOC; IOC President Jacques Rogge; Anita DeFrantz, IOC member and Chairwoman of the IOC Women and Sport Commission; the members of the IOC Women and Sport Commission; and the attendees of the IV IOC World Conference on Women and Sport.

During the next two days, more than 600 participants from across the globe will debate the topic “Sport as a vehicle for social change” and the role women and girls can play in this. Keynote speakers include former top athletes, representatives from governments, businesses, UN agencies and the media, and academics. The event is under the patronage of Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and is jointly organised by the IOC and the NOC of Jordan.

Every year, the International Olympic Committee (IOC), presents awards based on a certain theme that is both relevant with current issues and in line with what sport and Olympism is all about.

Malaysia has no shortage of deserving individuals/institutions who have played a major role in developing sports and promoting Olympism in Country. Each year the IOC writes to OCM to nominate a person or organisation to receive a specially themed trophy that has been commissioned by the IOC.
