Malaysian Performance – A Recap 30th September 2023

The Malaysian Contingent has accumulated 1 gold medal and 4 bronze medals on Saturday, 30th September 2023.

The Malaysian Contingent secured 2 bronze medals on the opening day of the Diving competition.

Dato’ Pandelela Rinong Pamg OLY and Nur Dhabitah Sabri OLY claimed a bronze medal in the Women’s Synchronised 10m Platform event.

The Chinese duo, Quan Hongchan OLY and Chen Yuxi OLY, outclassed the competition by registering a total of 375.30 points, followed by Matsuri Arai OLY and Minami Itahashi OLY from Japan with 290.04 points, while Pandelela and Nur Dhabitah scored 266.94 points.

In the Men’s Synchronised 3m Springboard event, Ooi Tze Liang OLY and Muhammad Syafiq Puteh added another bronze medal with a total of 322.00 points. Yan Siyu and He Chao OLY from China topped the field with 422.55 points, followed by Yi Jaegyeong and Woo Haram OLY from Korea with 393.00 points.

The Athletics Team also contributed 2 bronze medals to the Malaysian Contingent.

These 2 bronze medals were secured by sprinters – Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi in the Men’s 100m event and Shereen Samson Vallabuoy in the Women’s 400m event, thereby ending the 17-year medal drought in Athletics for Malaysia. The last medals in Athletics were a silver by Roslinda Samsu OLY in the Women’s Pole Vault event and a bronze by Noraseela Mohd Khalid OLY in Women’s 400m Hurdles at the 15th Asian Games Doha 2006.

Muhammad Azeem clinched his first international medal with a time of 10.11s, equalling his seasons best performance. The gold medal in Men’s 100m event was won Xie Zhenye OLY from China with a time of 9.97s, followed by Puripol Boonson from Thailand in 10.02s. The victory by Muhammad Azeem also marked the first medal for Malaysian in Men’s 100m dash since the gold medal in the same event by Rabuan Pit at the 9th Asian Games Delhi 1982.

Mohd Aswan Che Azmi lost to Kan Chia Wei from Chinese Taipei 0-5 in the Men’s 63.5-71kg Quarter Final bout.

The DOTA2 Team advanced to the Semi Finals after beating Saudi Arabia 2-0.

The Men’s Team suffered a 3-4 defeat to Korea in their fourth match in Pool B. Nevertheless, they still maintain their position at the top of the Group ahead of their last match against China on Monday, 2nd October 2023.

The Squash Women’s Team secured the third gold medal for the Malaysian Contingent.

Aifa Azman delivered the winning point in a nerve-wrecking final match ensuring victory for Malaysia by defeating Hong Kong 2-1.

The dramatic victory saw Rachel Mae Arnold lose the first match 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 8-11, 6-11 to Tong Tsz Wing. Sivasangari Subramaniam then leveled the score by beating Ho Tze Lok 11-5, 11-8, 11-6 in the second match, before Aifa Azman clinched the winning point by defeating Chan Sin Yuk 11-5, 11-8, 11-13, 11-8 in the third match.

The team events for Men and Women in Squash were being introduced in the Asian Games since the 16th Asian Games Guangzhou 2010. Since then, the Squash Women’s Team had contributed a total of 4 medals (3 golds and 1 bronze) for the Malaysian Contingent as follows:
a. Gold – 16th Asian Games Guangzhou 2010
b. Gold – 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014
c. Bronze – 18th Asian Games Jakarta-Palembang 2018.
d. Gold – 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022
