Emblem
The chequered patterned-emblem, known as as “ichimatsu moyo” in the Edo period (1603-1867), was designed by Japanese artist Asao Tokolo. The harmonised chequered emblem in a traditional Japanese colour of indigo blue expresses elegance and sophistication. The three varieties of rectangular shapes represents different countries, cultures and ways of thinking. It incorporates the message of “Unity in Diversity.”

NAME
Miraitowa
Description
Miraitowa is the official mascot of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020. Created by Japanese artist Ryo Taniguchi, Miraitowa was inspired by the blue-checked patterns of the Tokyo 2020 logo.
The name MIRAITOWA is based on the Japanese words “mirai”, meaning “future”, and “towa”, meaning “eternity”, representing the wish that the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will lead to a future of everlasting hope in the hearts of everyone around the world.
Torch
Made from approximately 30% recycled aluminium, the cherry blossom motif torch is inspired by Japanese tradition and created using the same aluminium extrusion manufacturing technology used in the production of Shinkansen Bullet train.
The 1.2kg Tokyo 2020 Olympic torch is designed in the form of the Olympic flames, with five separate flames emerging from the flower petals and coming together as one at the centre of the torch to give off a more brilliant light – the Path of Hope.
