170 Malaysian athletes participated in 14 sports at the XVIII Commonwealth Games 2006. Badminton and Lawn Bowls had their best ever gold-medal haul with four (4) gold medals and two (2) gold medals respectively.

The 2006 Games saw the debut of Lee Chong Wei who won his first two Commonwealth Games medals and subsequently went on to defend his title in the next three Commonwealth Games. Chong Wei won the Men’s Singles and helped the team to the gold medal in the Mixed Team event.

Other medallists in badminton include Chan Chong Ming / Koo Kien Keat (Men’s Doubles), Chin Ee Hui / Wong Pei Tty (Women’s Doubles) and Choong Tan Fook, Julia Wong Pei Xian, Wong Choong Hann and Wong Mew Choo who completed the line-up for the Mixed Team gold.

Siti Zalina Ahmad (Women’s Single) and the trio of Azlina Arshad, Nor Hashimah Ismail and Nor Iryani Azmi reaped the gold medals for Lawn Bowls while Mohd Faizal Baharom (Men’s 56 kg) completed Malaysia’s gold medal collection at the XVIII Commonwealth Games.
