Led by its Flagbearer, Muhammad Hakimi Ismail, the Malaysian Contingent returned with a slightly better medal haul than the 2014 Games. Weightlifting produced its best showing at a Commonwealth Games when Azroy Hazalwafie and Muhammad Aznil Bidin won gold in the 52kg and 62kg categories respectively.

Badminton, on the other hand, continued to see a decline since the 2010 Commonwealth Games where they hit a high of four (4) gold medals. In Gold Coast, only Dato’ Lee Chong Wei and Vivian Hoo Kah Mun / Chow Mei Kuan were victorious in the Finals of the Men’s Singles and Women’s Doubles respectively.

Emblem

The emblem, a sunburst of colour, was designed to capture the essence of the Gold Coast and the Commonwealth Games. It was inspired by the Gold Coast’s stunning beach-side location, its iconic skyline, and the colours are representative of the coast, the hinterland and the celebratory atmosphere, which is synonymous with the region. Centred upon fluid representations of a gymnast, a hurdler and a swimmer, the emblem reflects the Games’ deep heritage and humanity.

Mascot

A bright blue surfing male koala, with unusual markings on his paws, Borobi, was the official mascot of the XXI Commonwealth Games. The name Borobi is derived from a dialect used by an indigenous Australian group from the Gold Coast region – the Yugambeh people.
