Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund

The Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund is chaired by Dato’ Thomas Lee. The Fund was established in November 1999, in memory of the late Tan Sri Alex Lee, former Vice President of OCM, who passed away in a scuba diving accident in Papua New Guinea on Sunday, 31st October 1999.

The Education Fund provides study grants, of a maximum of RM 5,000 per year, to former and current national athletes to further their tertiary education.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia invites applications for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund via its website and social media platforms as well as the National Sports Associations who are affiliates of the OCM.

To be eligible for the award, the applicant must meet the following criteria:

  • Malaysian citizen; and
  • Active or retired national athlete; and
  • Currently enrolled at an approved local university or centres of learning or have been accepted to enter into an approved local university or centres of learning; and
  • Currently enrolled in or have been accepted to study in a course or program that will enhance future career prospects; and
  • Is not in receipt of any financial aid or rewards from other educational institutions or organisations; and
  • Is in possession of reasonably good results in the SPM or STPM or A-Level or its equivalent.

Application must be completed on the prescribed form and must be submitted to the Olympic Council of Malaysia through the respective National Sports Associations.

To date, the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund had awarded the scholarships to a total of 62 national athletes from 22 sports, to further their tertiary education since 2000. The Fund stood at RM 1,539,308 as at 31st December 2019.

Each year, a charity golf event is held to raise funds for the Tan Sri Alex Lee Athletes’ Education Fund. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the event for the year 2020 had been cancelled.

For the year 2021, the charity golf event has been scheduled for 10 November 2021.
