The Wushu Team has contributed the 25th gold medal for the Malaysian Contingent to the 32nd SEA Games Cambodia 2023 on Friday, 12 May 2023.
Ms. Tan Cheong Min, 25 years old, who is the 2019 World Champion in Wushu Women’s Nandao event, grabbed the second gold medal through the Wushu Women’s Nandao + Nangun event with the total score of 19.1600 points, making her the only double gold medalist of the Malaysian Contingent so far. The silver and bronze medals of this event won by Ms. Thi Tu Binh Phan (18.4130 points) of Vietnam and Ms. Aye Thitsar Myint (18.3030 points) of Myanmar respectively.
Ms. Tan Cheong Min has created history for herself by winning 2 gold medals in her first appearance in this SEA Games. She had contributed the first gold medal in Wushu Women’s Nanquan event earlier on Wednesday, 10 May 2023.
Dato’ Chong Kim Fatt, Vice President the OCM, who is also President of the Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM), President of the Wushu Federation of ASEAN-China (WFAC), Council Member of the Wushu Federation of Asia (WFA) and International Wushu Federation (IWUF) was given the honour to present the medals to the medalists for the Wushu Women’s Nandao & Nangun event.
Meanwhile, Dr. Nagulendran Kangayatkarasu, Secretary General of the Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia was given the honour to present the mascots to the medalists of the same event.
The OCM would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the great efforts by Dato’ Chong Kim Fatt in his capacity as the President of the Wushu Federation of ASEAN-China in ensuring that the sport of Wushu is being listed in the sports program of the 32nd SEA Games Cambodia 2023.
The Wushu Team had also exceeded the medal target of only 2 gold medals set for them with a remarkable achievement of 10 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver and 6 bronze. Out of the 10 medals, 8 medals were contributed through the Wushu Taolu events and 2 medals through the Wushu Sanda events.
“The sport of Wushu has become very competitive at the SEA Games level”,
“In order for us to achieve good results at the international Wushu competitions as well as the Multi-Sport Games, we need to embark into new strategies in terms of training, coaching and umpiring etc”,
“We are hoping to get more and consistent support from the NSC and the NSI in our preparation for the upcoming international competition and in the Multi-Sport Games”,
“Our next focus will be the participation in the 19th Asian Games in China in the month of September this year. We will do our utmost best to contribute more medals for the Malaysian Contingent” stated Dato’ Chong Kim Fatt, who is also the Chef de Mission of the Malaysian Contingent to the 19th Asian Games Hangzhou 2022.
