Andre the Extraordinary Athlete

Andre Anura Anuar holds the distinction of being the first long jump athlete to cross the 8-metre mark and in the process of breaking the long jump national record.

With an amazing jump of 8.02-metre at the New Clark City Athletics Stadium in 2019, Andre broke the 12-years old national record overcoming the 7.88-metre record set by Josbert Tinus, a fellow Sabahan at Thailand Open in 2007.

“I am very proud to be the first Malaysian long jump athlete to surpass the 8-metre mark and in the process break 12 year national record”

“Even though I managed to beat the record, there was moments where I was not satisfied with my jump during SEA Games in Philippines” said the 21 year old athlete.

A devout at Olympics is what his mission is and it is at the Asian Indoor Championship in early that Andre is pinning his hopes on making the grade for the Tokyo Olympics.

According to Andre, he did not see much difference in the regular training routine practically in the long jump after the MCO period.

“Mentally, it does not affect me. During the Covid19 pandemic, I did not experience any discomfort. I just miss getting out and about jumping” said the Sabah born athlete.

Andre also added that the coaches placed gave extra effort towards the athletes during the peak of the pandemic where they conducted their training sessions online via Zoom.

Even though they were only able to do their basic techniques, the sessions more or less helped them to improve their performance.

“To all long jump athlete, do not give up and keep working hard” advises Andre.

“One needs strength and speed to be a good long jumper in order to succeed”
