Nurul Azreena Mohd Fazil went down to Elif Berra Gokkir from Turkiye in the Archery Women’s Individual 1/32 Elimination with a score of 0-6 (27-29, 22-27, 25-27). This match concluded her journey and that of her fellow Malaysian archers in Paris 2024.
BADMINTON
It was a good day for Malaysian badminton at the Porte de La Chapelle Arena with the three remaining representatives in the Men’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and Women’s Doubles edging closer to the podium.
World No 12, Pearly Tan/ Thinaah Muralitharan created history by becoming the first Women’s Doubles pair from Malaysia to advance to the semifinals of the Olympics after a stunning victory over South Korea’s Kim So Yeong/Kong Hee Yong. The Malaysian duo triumphed over the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists and World No 10 with an impressive score of 21-12, 21-13 in 42 minutes. Malaysia’s best performance prior to Paris 2024 was when Vivian Hoo-Woon Khe Wei entered the quarterfinals before losing to eventual gold medallists, Ayaka Takahashi and Miyaki Matsutomo of Japan in Rio 2016.
Lee Zii Jia OLY advanced to the quarter finals of the Men’s Singles, overcoming home crowd favourite Toma Junior Popov of France 21-13, 24-22, earning himself a clash with Anders Antonsen of Denmark in the last eight.
In a pulsating match, Malaysian Men’s Doubles specialists, Aaron Chia OLY/Soh Wooi Yik OLY made an impressive comeback in the second before winning the rubber to defeat the Indian pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/Chirag Shetty 13-21, 21-14, 21-16.
GOLF
Gavin Kyle Green OLY finished the men’s individual stroke play round 1 at the 53rd position in the 60-man leaderboard with three over 74, as he struggled with the challenging Le Golf National course,
On his third successive Olympic appearance, Gavin trails leader and 2021 US Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama of Japan by 11 shots.
