On Thursday, 23rd April 2026, the Malaysian Contingent officially commenced its campaign at the 6th Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026. Representing the nation across three sports on the opening day, the Malaysian athletes showed promise in both final events and preliminary rounds held across the scenic coastal venues of Sanya.
The day began at the Sanya Bay Photography Base with the Aquathlon Individual Finals. In the Men’s Individual event, Mr. Isaac Zhen Wei Tan clocked a time of 31:41 to finish in 9th place, followed closely by Mr. Yap Qi Yi, who secured the 10th spot with a time of 31:42. In the Women’s Individual event, Ms. Esther Joy Chen Hong Li and Ms. Cindy Sui Yea Zhen finished in 12th and 16th place respectively, setting a competitive benchmark for the multisport squad.
Over at the Tianya Haijiao venue, the Beach Volleyball teams delivered a standout performance in the preliminary stage. The Women’s Team of Ms. Rachael Goh Yu Jie and Ms. Sin Sing Yee dominated their opening Pool E match against Syria, winning in straight sets 2-0 with scores of 21-14 and 21-6. The Men’s Team of Mr. Muhammad Isma Haziq Ismail and Mr. Tan Yong Jen faced a tough challenge in their opening Pool F match, going down 2-0 to Thailand. However, they secured a 2-0 victory against Mongolia following a disqualification.
In Sailing, held at Haihong Square, the Malaysian youth sailors navigated tricky conditions to begin their series. Ms. Lydia Hannah Jasmine Lukman provided a significant highlight in the Girl’s Optimist event, ending the first race in an impressive 3rd position out of 14 competitors. Meanwhile, Ms. Mia Azrania Mohd Azrald finished her opening race in 6th place. The Boy’s Optimist event saw consistent performances from Mr. Muhammad Yaasin Syahrizan and Mr. Khairul Ilzani Mohd Afendy, who currently sit in 10th and 11th place respectively after the first race of the series.
In the ILCA4 category, Ms. Nur Hafizanah Zailan led the Malaysian challenge in the Girl’s division by finishing 7th in her opening race, while Ms. Sara Amanda Mohd Noor Azman concluded the day in 11th place. In the Boy’s ILCA4, Mr. Muhammad Hilfi Nafael Mohd Hasrizan and Mr. Muhammad Aiman Aqeel Mohd Firdaus recorded 10th and 15th place finishes respectively in Race 1.
The Windsurfing events proved challenging at Haihong Square. In the Foil Windsurfing series, Mr. Muhammad Yusri Syahrizan and Ms. Marcella Wilson Villaceran both faced difficulties, recording DNFs in their opening races but remain in the hunt as the series progresses.
As the preliminary rounds continue, the Malaysian Contingent looks forward to building on this opening day momentum as more athletes prepare to take to the sand and sea in the coming days.
